Renovations serve as starting point to rebuild Downtown Long Beach business hub
Neel-Schaffer was selected to provide professional design services for the renovation of Jeff Davis Avenue for the City of Long Beach. Long Beach was one of the cities hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina. All structures within several blocks of the beach were severely damaged or destroyed, which halted business for the city’s downtown area. This “Streetscape” project served as a starting point for the rebuilding of what was once the shopping and dining hub of Long Beach.
Neel-Schaffer’s team of professionals created a renovation design of Jeff Davis Avenue that included new asphalt paving and the installation of curb and gutters, as well as new sidewalks, on-street parking, decorative street lighting, street trees and landscape plantings.
Along with large-scaled infrastructure improvements, a number of smaller details were included into the design of the project, giving the project the unique appeal of the City of Long Beach. Iron medallions featuring the City of Long Beach’s logo were also incorporated into the final project design. Sidewalk materials consisted of scored concrete and attractive brick pavers.
Neel-Schaffer coordinated with leaders of City of Long Beach to make the project successful.
Funding for the project was made possible through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program of the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA).
