Mobile Bayfront Park Restoration

MOBILE COUNTY, AL

Changes coming to popular park on Dauphin Island

Neel-Schaffer is providing engineering and design services to evaluate the construction of a living shoreline and/or sandy beach along the Mobile Bay shoreline within the park.

Located on Dauphin Island Parkway, Bayfront Park is an approximately 20-acre park with public access to Mobile Bay and other public amenities, such as a playground, picnic areas, and restrooms. Approximately 50 percent of the park is estuarine marine wetland. The park is maintained and staffed by the Mobile County Commission.

The Coastal portion of the Bayfront Park Restoration and Improvements Project on the Mobile Bay shoreline will involve restoring eroded marshland, restoring the adjacent shoreline, providing appropriate protection from waves, and installing features that would best improve the coastal portion of the park.

Mobile County’s property includes approximately 6,000 feet of sandy and marsh shoreline. Over the past several decades, this shoreline has eroded, and in some locations has retreated to the embankment of Dauphin Island Parkway.
