BILOXI, MS
Neel-Schaffer, an ENR Top 200 Design firm, is seeking an Archaeologist to join our Environmental Team. We are seeking a motivated archaeologist with a Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field and at least 1 year of experience conducting archaeological surveys. This position will support archaeological investigations and cultural resource studies for transportation, utility, aviation, coastal restoration, and other infrastructure projects throughout Mississippi and, occasionally the Southeast.
The ideal candidate will assist with archaeological fieldwork, GIS data management, technical report preparation, and cultural resource compliance efforts to support NEPA and regulatory compliance.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct archaeological field investigations, including Phase I cultural resource surveys, site delineation, monitoring, and other field studies.
- Record archaeological resources using accepted field methods and applicable state and federal guidelines.
- Maintain detailed field notes, site records, photographs, and spatial data.
- Collect, organize, and manage field data for archaeological investigations.
- Utilize GPS equipment and GIS software to document archaeological resources and prepare maps and figures.
- Prepare technical reports, cultural resource survey reports, site forms, and supporting documentation for agency review.
- Conduct archival and background research utilizing agency databases, historic maps, aerial photography, and other sources.
- Assist with National Register of Historic Places evaluations and cultural resource assessments.
- Support Section 106 compliance efforts and agency coordination under the National Historic Preservation Act.
- Travel throughout Mississippi and occasionally neighboring Gulf Coast states to conduct field investigations. Overnight travel is expected based on project needs.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
- 0–3 years of professional archaeological or cultural resource management experience.
- Knowledge of archaeological survey methods, site recording procedures, and cultural resource management practices.
- Experience conducting archaeological field investigations, including pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, site recording, and related fieldwork.
- Familiarity with Mississippi archaeology, Southeastern archaeology, or Gulf Coast cultural resources.
- Experience using GIS and GPS technologies for field data collection and mapping; Experience with ArcGIS Pro is preferred.
- Experience with ArcGIS Field Maps, or similar mobile GIS applications is a plus.
- Strong technical writing skills and experience preparing clear, concise, and well-organized reports.
- Experience conducting archival research and reviewing historic maps, aerial photography, and agency records.
- Familiarity with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and cultural resource compliance processes.
- Experience preparing cultural resource reports, archaeological site forms, and supporting documentation for agency review is preferred.
- Familiarity with Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) standards and guidelines is a plus.
- Ability to work independently in the field and collaboratively as part of multidisciplinary project teams.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and rugged terrain.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel overnight as needed.
- Experience with Phase II Testing and Phase III Data-Recovery/Mitigation is a plus
- Meeting or progressing toward the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualifications Standards for Archaeology is a plus.
