PROJECT SPOTLIGHTS Solid Waste
Methane to Gas Landfill Conversion | Starkville, MS
Neel-Schaffer provided design, preliminary engineering, document preparation, and construction oversight services for this
$3 million facility that converts methane and carbon dioxide gas to electricity at the Golden Triangle Regional Landfill near
Starkville.
Methane and carbon dioxide gases are byproducts of the decomposition process in the landfill, and methane is a highly
combustible gas that can be used to provide heat or power electrical generating equipment. Neel-Schaffer assisted the Golden
Triangle Region Solid Waste Management Authority in the design and construction of a power generation system that utilizes
methane gas to generate one megawatt of electricity. The power is then purchased by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Orange County Landfill Expansion |
Orange County, FL
Neel-Schaffer provided Engineering Design, Permitting and
Construction Oversight services for the construction of Cell 9 for
the Orange County (FL) Landfill. The project included developing
a new landfill on a 3,000-acre southern expansion area and
construction of a 65-acre Class I disposal cell, a new scale
house with traffic controls, an employee break/office building,
leachate storage tanks and automatic (SCADA)pump stations,
LFG control system, a landfill vehicle maintenance facility, a tire
repair shop, a 10-acre paved transfer trailer staging areas, and
1.2 mile paved off-site road access. Permitting for the project
included obtaining 18 permits from six permitting agencies,
including USCOE, USEPA and FDEP. An onsite conservation
easement was established for mitigation of impacted wetlands
throughout the anticipated 30-year life of the expansion site.
