PROJECT SPOTLIGHTS Transportation
Capitol Street Renaissance | Jackson, MS
Neel-Schaffer managed a program that included funding, design, and construction
engineering services for a $5.6 million Complete Streets project that transformed
part of Capitol Street in downtown Jackson (MS) from a one-way thoroughfare to
a two-lane, two-way street that includes roundabouts, new landscaping, traffic-
calming features, and new lighting. Our firm helped accelerate the LPA design
process, and through careful monitoring of the unit-priced contract, and timely
decision making, we helped bring the project in under budget by $1 million.
Neel-Schaffer conducted an extensive study of the project area, involving the public,
special interest groups, City officials and developers. Plans were then developed
in a way that considered all traffic needs, enhanced the aesthetics of the area,
and provided a detailed traffic control strategy that allowed for the project to be
built while traffic continued during the construction phase. Three low-impact
roundabouts provide traffic calming, while crosswalks at splitter islands were
provided for pedestrian needs.
GDOT I-285 and SR 400 Improvements |
Atlanta, GA
Neel-Schaffer was one of the two lead design firms for the I-285/SR 400 interchange
improvements project that is now under construction near Atlanta, GA.
Ferrovial Agroman US Corp is the lead contractor for the project that the Georgia
Department of Transportation considers a priority for the metro Atlanta region.
The improvements involve two separate projects: The I-285/SR 400 Interchange
Reconstruction, and the SR 400 Collector-Distributor Lanes.
Neel-Schaffer’s role included all design elements for the SR 400 portion of the
project, from Hammond Drive to Pitts Road. This includes six major bridges, 4.05
miles of retaining walls, 5.67 miles of noise walls, roadway improvements for the
400 mainline and new CD lanes, roadway improvements for Mt. Vernon Road, and a
diverging diamond interchange at Abernathy Road.
Construction began in early 2017, and the project’s anticipated substantial
completion date is October 2020.
GDOT expects the improvements to reduce delays over 20,000 hours a day and
reduce traffic congestion and improvement safety in the areas surrounding the
interchange.
